Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine psycho-social characteristics of infants from multi-cultural families and characteristics of mother-infant interaction in order to offer the baseline data for various projects to support children from multi-cultural families. The findings of this study include: Infants from multi-cultural families develop language ability as they become older. Only 5% of them turned out to be delayed in language development. No significant difference was found in their language ability in terms of gender. However, a significant difference was found in terms of native country of their mothers. In cognitive ability, there was no significant difference in terms of gender, but a significant difference was found in terms of age. In particular, a significant difference was found in arithmetic in terms of native country, age, and education level of their mothers. Social ability scores of the children were at the normal level. However, boys showed higher scores than girls in hyperactivity, behavioral problems, and total difficulty. A significant difference was also found in social ability in terms of their mothers¡¯ native country. In mother-infant interaction, a significant difference was found in terms of age of the children and their mothers. While mothers of multi-cultural families showed low levels of parental affect and praise, infants from multi-cultural families showed high scores in social reactivity and energetic levels.
